CCA Timber Treatment

CCA Timber Treatment

Summary:

CCA Timber Treatment

What is CCA Treatment?

CCA ( Copper, Chrome, Arsenate) react chemically with the wood, which makes them insoluble and therefore suitable for use in situations where the treated wood may be exposed to the weather. This set of preservatives is effective in protecting wood from decay and attack by wood-boring insects and termites.

How it works:

  • Copper: Resists rot and fungal decay.

  • Chrome: Fixes the copper and arsenic into the wood’s cell walls, making the treatment more durable.

  • Arsenic: Protects against insect attack, such as termites.

CCA-treated wood can last 40 years or more, with some studies showing potential durability exceeding 60 years depending on factors like, climate, usage, wood type, and maintenance. It provides excellent protection against fungi and insects but requires proper coating to defend against elements like rain and sunlight.

CCA gives the timber a greenish look because of the copper content.

This type of treatment can not be brushed on. Here is the process:

When the timber comes out of the treatment cylinder, Fixation needs to happen. The Fixation is time and temperature dependant and can range from 24 hours (summer) to 7 days (winter).

There is different Hazard classes with CCA treated Timber, here at Great North we do H3 and H4:

H3 Exterior, above ground(moderate hazard): H3 Covers balustrades, fencing bearers and slats, outdoor decking and beams, garden furniture, laminated beams, weather boards, steps, cladding, stairs, Laths, Droppers, log homes, gates, fascia boards and plywood.

H4 Ground Contact (High Hazard): This level of treatment helps prevent agricultural posts and landscaping structures from rotting and termite attack. Also recommended for treatment in this hazard class are playground structures, Thatches, fencing, pergolas, carports, flower boxes, bridges and stakes.
